Tobacco Genome Initiative

The TGI (Tobacco Genome Initiative) has been established with the vision of finding out the true essence and underlining chromosome traits of the structural form of tobacco which is also referred to as Nicotiana tabacum in Latin. Interestingly, the crop has been in existence for over 500 years and grown in different parts of the world, yet limited documented research exists about the overall behavioral and structural elements that are in composition of the crop.

There is limited information available regarding the substances that are prevalent in the crop. N. tabacum is an amphiploid species (2n=48) and is believed to be created from the amalgamation between between N. sylvestris (2n=24) and N. tomentosiformis (2n=24). Also, the crop has a very large genome size as compared to other pairs within its segment and market.

The TGI has been exploring the genome and structure for some time now and have been able to successfully derive partial sequencing of the famous N. benthamiana genome. Typically, the data known to us states that this particular genome is an amphiploid specie with approximately 38 chromosomes. The chromosomes allow it to relate itself with the N. tabacum. Due to its strong relationship with N. tabacum, it is highly used as a model to study plant-disease interactions. N. tabacum is interestingly enough an important member of the agriculture family having roots with the Solanaceae family of plants. Tomato, eggplant and even pepper crop plants belong to the Solanceae family.

TGI offers several key benefits to the field of research and development. The results of TGI can be utilized to gain momentum in different areas of study relating to organism and structures. TGI development can even lead to ground breaking findings in the study of biotechnology and stem organisms. Tobacco genomics may lead to the elucidation of genetic factors that impact constituents associated with tobacco consumption.
